December always seems to blow in with a swirl of lights, lists, and expectations. Between decorating, shopping, hosting, and keeping family traditions alive, it’s easy to feel like you’re running a marathon—without time to catch your breath.

And if you’re a typical OWL—strong, capable, and always thinking of everyone else—you probably know exactly what that feels like. You juggle it all, determined to make the season magical for those you love.

But somewhere between the cookies, the errands, and the late nights, your own needs quietly slip off the list.

Stop right there! We need to have a little chat, because self-care isn’t a reward you earn after you’ve finished the holiday sprint; it’s the fuel that gets you across the finish line without collapsing in a heap of tinsel and resentment.

Here’s the thing: when we skip our walks, run on too little sleep, or stress eat through the season, our bodies notice. Hot flashes get worse, energy dips lower, and moods swing harder.

The magic starts to fade—because we’re not taking care of the person who keeps the whole show running: us.

Why Self-Care in December Isn’t Optional

Self-care isn’t selfish, especially now.

When you take care of yourself—when you rest, move, and nourish your body—you have more energy, patience, and presence to give. You laugh more easily. You enjoy the moment instead of powering through it.

So instead of waiting until January for a “fresh start,” what if you gave yourself some care right now? December doesn’t need to be something you survive; it can be something you savor.

Five Holiday Self-Care Tips That Actually Work

Here are a few easy ways to keep feeling strong, balanced, and joyful—even in the middle of the holiday whirlwind:

  • Move like your mood depends on it (because it does!). A brisk walk, a dance-off with your playlist, or chasing the dog around the yard—whatever gets you moving, do it.
  • Eat something green before the cookies. It doesn’t have to be kale (no judgment if you and kale are on a break). Just give your body a little real nourishment before the sugar parade.
  • Protect your sleep fiercely. Think of bedtime as a sacred ritual—pajamas, no screens, and at least one dramatic sigh of relief as you climb under the covers.
  • Use “no” as a complete sentence. You’re allowed to skip the third holiday potluck of the week. The world will spin on.
  • Take a five-minute holiday timeout. Sit down, put your feet up, breathe deeply, and pretend you’re in a spa instead of surrounded by wrapping paper and glitter.

The Real Gift

The holidays are about joy, connection, and love—and that includes you, too. You spend so much time making everyone else’s season special. This year, give yourself the gift of care, rest, and grace. Because when you feel good, everything else feels a little more merry and bright.

And who knows? You might even have enough energy left to enjoy your own holiday magic—without needing a nap in the gift-wrap pile.

OWL.BiKe isn’t just a cycling community—it’s a flock of unstoppable women in Lycra rewriting the rules on what power looks like past 50. We’re Older Women in Lycra (OWLs), and we’ve decided blending in is overrated.
For us, showing up beats showing off every time. Some of us chase watts in Tuesday ZRL races, others roll into our Grey Zone Empowerment rides—think trivia, laughter, and light pedaling while learning what real empowerment feels like. Whether you’re spinning easy or pushing hard, every ride is a win because you showed up and had fun doing it.
OWL.BiKe is where friendship meets grit. We lift each other up with genuine gratitude and a good dose of humor, reminding one another that we still get to do this—and that’s worth celebrating. There’s no talk of slowing down here, only building strength, confidence, and joy.
In our flock, age isn’t a limit—it’s an edge. We ride together, laugh together, and rise together. Because when OWLs take flight, the world can’t help but notice.
